BOTOX COSMETIC
A million people have been treated with Botox Cosmetic since its FDA
(Food and Drug Administration) approval in 2002. It is a simple,
nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that has been proven to be
effective.
Botox Cosmetic can be used to smooth wrinkles in the neck and face to create a
more youthful look. Removing wrinkles from between the eyes can
dramatically change a person's look frome one of anger or sadness to one of
contentment and restedness. It is also frequently ised on the thin
wrinkles that surround the eyes (often called "crows feet") and the mouth, but
can also be used in other areas, such as along the chin and jaw.
Botox Cosmetic treatments are becoming

increasingly popular, and with good. In many cases,
Botox Cosmetic has become a very effective method for reducing wrinkles.
|
| |
How
did Botox Cosmetic come about? |
| |
|
Botox was first approved in 1989 to treat two eye muscle disorders -
uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm) and misaligned eyes (strabismus).
In 2000, the toxin was approved to treat a neurological movement disorder that
causes sever neck and shoulder contraction, known as cervical dystonia.
Aa an unusual side effect of the eye disorder treatment, doctors observed that
Botox softened the vertical frown (glabellar) lines between the eyebrows.
But until this improvement was actually demonstrated in clinical studies,
Allergan Inc., of Irvine, California, was prohibited from making this claim for
the product.
By April 2002, the FDA was satisfied by its review of studies indicating that
Botox reduced the severity of frown lines. The agency then granted
approval to use the drug for this condition.
Botox injections are the fasted-growing cosmetic procedure in the
industry, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
(ASAPS). In 2001, more than 1.6 million people received injections, an
increase of 46 percent over the previous year.

How
does Botox Cosmetic work? |
| |
 |
Botox Cosmetic is made of botulinum toxin
type A, a purified protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium
botulinum. This solution works by temporarily paralyzing nerve
impulses, which reduces the movement of those muscles in the area being
treated. With less movement, the skin surface gradully smoothes out, and
the moderate to server frown lines between the brows begin
to fade. |
What
causes frown lines? |
| |
The lines that appear between the brows acutally result from muscle
movement and the passage of time.
Two muscles are largely responsible for frown lines between the brows.
When those muscles contract, they draw the brows together. As skin
becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result in those lines
that form. |

The
Injection Process |
| |
-
Botox Cosmetic treatments can be performed in the doctor's office.
-
The doctor will determine where to administer the injections by
examining the patient's ability to move certain muscles. The location,
size, and use of the muscles that create the wrinkles vary among individuals.
-
The doctor will administer serveral tiny injections of Botox
Cosmetic directly into the muscle that cause that moderate to servere wrinkles.
-
No anesthesia is required, although the doctor may choose to numb
the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting.
(Discomfort is usually minimal and bried.)
-
Depending on the number of Botox Cosmetic injections needed, the
treatment make take 10 to 30 minutes.
-
Patient's can usually return to work or home immediately after the
procedure.
